ChatGPT Reflection
Before reading this article, I knew that AI could not only help learners enhance their writing quality by assisting with grammar, spelling, coherence, and clarity. Additionally, AI helps teaches provide immediate feedback which saves their time and allows them to focus more on the content of students’ writing. I think that AI tools are beneficial for both learners and teachers, especially in writing skills. However, AI tools not only help on grammar, spelling and other aspects of writing, but they also address and support other issues.
In this article, several advantages of AI-assisted writing are mentioned. For example, while we already knew that AI could provide immediate feedback, but it also could offer personalized feedback. Based on a learners’ writing, AI can offer suggestions to improve writing flow, organization and vocabulary. Furthermore, it supports brainstorming when learner encounter obstacles. It assists in generating ideas and formulating research questions which can be particularly useful for academic research.
Several advantages are mentioned in this article, and I think that AI tools indeed help learners improve their writing, but there still are some concerns when learners do not use AI tools wisely. AI-assisted writing can be very convenient and time-saving. However, when learners use it without critical thinking, it may lead to problems.
AI tools such as ChatGPT may sometimes provide incorrect or misleading information which requires careful verification. Moreover, there are ethical and integrity concerns. Over-reliance on AI for writing may lead to plagiarism or a decline originality and critical thinking skills. ChatGPT also does not always provide accurate citations, which can be a major issue for those who do not double-check references.
I think ChatGPT is a helpful tool if used correctly, but a threat if misused. It helps enhance writing quality by improving grammar and spelling. It also provides supports for students who struggle with English academic writing and helps reduce linguistic barriers. Additionally, it also assists students in generating ideas.
If we use ChatGPT correctly, it can be a helpful tool. However, when learners misuse it, problems arise. Students might copy AI-generated text without proper citation, which violates academic integrity. In this case, I am afraid that students will over-reliance on ChatGPT, making them less likely to develop their own analytical and writing skills. When students simply copy and paste content generated by ChatGPT without brainstorming and critical thinking, they may encounter a situation where they fail to develop their own ideas.
This over-reliance on AI can lead to academic dishonesty, a lack of originality and difficulties in expressing their own ideas effectively. Therefore, teacher is an important role to guide students using ChatGPT responsibly. Teachers should teach students that use AI as a writing assistant. Students can use ChatGPT for revision or brainstorming, but they should still write their own ideas. They can use information which generates from AI, but they need to cross-check information with reliable sources before use in academic writing.
Most importantly, institutions should provide clear guidelines on how AI tools can be used ethically in academic work. By following these rules, I believe that learners can use AI tools such as ChatGPT wisely.
