Digital Storytelling Module

We divided this Digital Storytelling Module into three parts: drawing, story creation, and recording. Every illustration in the storybook was hand-drawn. The first half was completed by Debbie, while I was responsible for the second half. We each completed the drawings for our part of the storybook. However, due to limited time, we couldn’t make the drawings perfect. To enhance creativity, we used small icons provided by Book Creator when placing our drawings in the book. The entire story was developed from scratch through our joint discussion. As for the recordings, Debbie and I split the work evenly. The division of work was very clear, and I think it went well. My partner and I respected each other's opinions. Through this collaboration, I learned that it's okay to ask others for help when needed. In the past, I didn’t like to ask help, so I would try to figure things out on my own. But now, I realize that seeking help at the right time is a good thing, and my partner was also happy to support me. I think the only challenge we faced while working as a pair was that Book Creator doesn’t allow simultaneous editing. So, when we were editing separately without discussing, we didn’t know how far the other person had progressed.

We came up with the story completely on our own. We did not use ChatGPT to write it. However, we did use ChatGPT to help us analyze the story mountain. Book Creator has many interesting features. One of the features we used was the function to insert small images. Since we didn’t have enough time to make every drawing perfect, we used this function to add extra images and make the storybook more creative. As for the challenges we faced, it was my first time using Book Creator, so I had to spend a lot of time learning how to use it. The biggest issue was that we could not edit the book at the same time, which was a bit inconvenient. In the end, we decided to work separately first, then discuss and combine our parts afterward.

The most meaningful part for me was writing a story proposal and creating a complete story. Throughout the process, I had to think deeply because I wanted the story to be educational for children. I started to reflect on what kinds of things might confuse children at that age. I thought about self-identity, such as questions like “Who am I?” and “Why am I different from others?” This could be related to appearance, interests, or other personal traits. I hoped that children could find themselves and learn to accept their uniqueness through the main character of the storybook. Working on this project influenced my thinking as a future language teacher. It showed me the importance of creativity, collaboration, and technology in language learning. Through projects like this, students can express their thoughts in meaningful ways.
